Bengkung is a centuries-old Malay postpartum tradition.
After birth, the mother is wrapped from ribs to hips in one long strip of soft woven cotton, tied — not stuck with Velcro, not snapped with hooks.
The wrap is firm enough to feel like a hug, but never tight enough to hurt. The goal isn't "snapping back."
The goal is support — for a uterus that's contracting, for organs that are settling, for an abdominal wall that's been carrying a baby for nine months.
A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that abdominal binders reduce pain at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours after C-section, improve ambulatory function, and lower distress — making them a "secure, cost-effective, and non-pharmacological solution… strongly recommended as part of routine postpartum care."
