Shayla Bryant

Shayla Bryant is a Professional School Counselor at Atlanta Technical College Preparatory Academy, Adjunct Instructor, the founder of Malawi’s House, a certified Holistic Birth and Postpartum Doula, certified Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, and a Maternal Sepsis advocate. Shayla has an extensive background in the Mental Health field, so counseling and advocacy is second nature.

She currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and their three children. Before becoming aware of the Black Maternal Health crisis, She consciously chose to have a Homebirth which inspired her to start Malawi’s House Birth Supply. Later, she birthed two more children in the comfort of their home. While operating as a small birth supply business, Malawi’s House was featured in Shoutout Atlanta, Voyage ATL Magazine, and an interviewee on a few mom-focused Podcasts. Malawi’s House has rebranded to focus more on Postpartum Care Support and Childbirth Education.

As a Birthworker, Black Maternal Health is so important to Shayla, because she simply wants to see the Black mother and her baby live and thrive. She believes that with proper childbirth education, evidence based information, proper pre and postnatal care, postpartum support, equity standards for Black mothers, ethical practices, and ancestral traditional practices all factor in to combating the Black Maternal Health crisis in this country.

Shayla decided to continue her education and pursue a Doctorate degree in Human Services with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Management. Her focus is Black Maternal and Infant Health, as she recently started a non-profit organization, Malawi’s House Foundation, Inc., to support Black families with evidence-based maternal information, and assist with financial support to work with a professional midwife for out-of-institution births.
