C-Section Recovery Week by Week: What's Normal in the First 6 Weeks
Share
A C-section is major surgery, and recovery takes real time. Plan on 6 weeks or more for the scar to close and about 12 weeks for the inside layers to fully heal. A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found abdominal binders cut pain in the first 48 hours, help you move better, and lower distress. Here's what's normal, and what's not, week by week.
What happens days 0 to 3 in the hospital?
- IV in place; catheter usually until day 2
- Bleeding (lochia) starts
- Pain managed with IV meds, then oral
- Walking encouraged within 12 to 24 hours. Short and slow, to prevent blood clots
- First bowel movement is a milestone (and often a hurdle)
- Flag immediately: Fever over 100.4°F, heavy clotting, calf pain or swelling (DVT risk), incision drainage, foul smell at the incision.
What's normal in week 1 (days 3 to 7)?
You're home. Bleeding continues, gushes when standing. Incision feels tight, possibly itchy as it heals. Sleeping is awful. You can't roll easily. An acetaminophen and ibuprofen rotation manages pain for most. Constipation is normal. Stool softener helps.
- Flag: Incision opening, foul-smelling drainage, redness spreading, fever, soaking through a pad in under an hour.
- When to start wrapping: Most surgeons clear gentle Bengkung wrapping about one week after birth, with a healed-looking incision. See Can You Wear a Belly Wrap After a C-Section?.
What's normal in week 2?
Bleeding slows. You can drive again (most providers, around 2 weeks). Walking becomes much more comfortable.
Emotional crash. Baby blues peak around days 3 to 10 and usually lift by day 14. Incision still numb; the numbness can persist for months.
- Flag: Persistent sadness or hopelessness beyond 2 weeks (PPD screening); incision opening; lochia turning bright red again after slowing.
What's normal in weeks 3 to 4?
Lochia mostly done. Energy slowly returning. Incision visibly closed; itchy/tingly nerves regenerating.
Hair starts falling out (peaks around month 3. Normal, stops by month 12). You can lift "more than the baby" (consult provider).
- Wrap tip: This is the sweet spot for daily Bengkung wear. 6 to 8 hours a day for most moms.
What's normal in weeks 5 to 6?
6-week postpartum visit happens. Most providers clear vaginal sex, light exercise, and full activity.
"All clear" doesn't mean "back to normal". Feeling not-back-to-normal for months is OK. Pelvic floor PT referral conversation. Ask for one even if your provider doesn't bring it up.
- Flag: Any sharp incision pain, internal pain, urinary leaking that hasn't improved.
What do real C-section moms say about this stretch?
"I had a C-section. I retained so much water for like three weeks. I swelled up so bad. Blurry vision too. I became a huge marshmallow." (TikTok comment)
"It feels better than the hospital binder until it slides up." (Amazon review of a Velcro band)
"After my C-section I thought this would be helpful, however, it rides up and the bottom of this would dig right into my incision." (Amazon review)
"Honestly it helped me move around easier because everything felt 'held in' so I worried less about the incision bursting open." (Amazon review (3-star, but praising support))

What helps most in the first 6 weeks?
- A real recovery plan, not just a check-up at 6 weeks
- A wrap that supports without grinding the scar
- Stool softener and water
- A second pair of hands (mom, partner, friend) for the first 2 weeks
- Sleep when possible
- A mental health check at 2 weeks AND 6 weeks. Don't wait for the appointment to volunteer your real feelings
Frequently asked questions
When can I shower after a C-section?
Most providers allow showers at 24 hours. Avoid soaking baths until cleared (4 to 6 weeks).
Why is my belly still huge at week 2?
Water retention + uterus still shrinking. Both improve significantly between week 3 and week 6. See Why Does My Belly Still Look Pregnant 6 Weeks Postpartum?.
When can I drive?
Around 2 weeks for most providers, once you can do an emergency stop without pain.
Will a belly wrap help my scar heal?
Indirectly. By supporting the area and reducing pulling force on the incision when you move. A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials showed clear pain reduction at 6 to 48 hours; longer-term scar healing depends on your body and surgical technique.
Bottom line
C-section recovery is slower than vaginal recovery and has more flag-and-call moments. Week-by-week awareness helps you spot what's normal vs. what's not. A soft Bengkung wrap (cleared by your surgeon at about one week) makes the day-to-day mechanics dramatically easier.
