Do Your Feet Stay Bigger After Pregnancy?

Do Your Feet Stay Bigger After Pregnancy?

For a lot of women, yes, permanently. Going up half a size to a full size after pregnancy is common, and unlike swelling it does not reverse, because the change is structural rather than fluid.

One mom wrote on Reddit: "Always had size 9-10 women's flat and wide feet, now I'm still in size 11-12." This is a change almost nobody warns you about.

Why does foot size change?

Two things. Relaxin and other pregnancy hormones increase ligament laxity throughout the body, including the ligaments holding up the arch of the foot. At the same time you are carrying significantly more weight through those ligaments.

The arch flattens slightly under the load. A flatter arch means a longer, wider foot. When the ligaments tighten again after birth, they do not always restore the original arch height.

How do I tell the difference between swelling and a real size change?

Time. Swelling comes and goes, is usually worse at the end of the day, and eases over the first weeks after birth.

A structural change is consistent. If your feet still measure larger at 6 months and shoes that once fitted no longer do, that is a size change rather than fluid.

Does it get better?

The swelling part does. The arch change often does not, and for many women the new size is permanent.

Second and subsequent pregnancies can add to it, though not always.

What actually helps?

Get measured properly rather than buying by memory, because squeezing into old shoes causes real foot problems on top of the size change. Choose shoes with genuine arch support, and consider supportive insoles if the arch has flattened.

Foot and calf strengthening helps with function and comfort even when it does not change the size. If you get persistent foot pain, plantar fascia irritation is common postpartum and a podiatrist or physiotherapist can help.

There is also a body-image piece here that deserves naming. Losing a shoe collection you loved is a genuine small grief on top of everything else, and it is reasonable to be annoyed about it.

Frequently asked questions

Do your feet permanently get bigger after pregnancy?
For many women, yes. The arch can flatten under hormonal ligament laxity plus extra weight, and it does not always recover.

How much bigger do feet get after pregnancy?
Commonly half a size to a full size. Width often increases too.

Is it swelling or a permanent change?
Swelling eases over the first weeks. If your feet still measure larger at 6 months, it is structural.

Do feet get bigger with each pregnancy?
They can, though the change is often largest with the first.

Can I do anything to get my old shoe size back?
Arch support and foot strengthening help comfort and function. They do not usually restore the original size.
