Do Your Hips and Ribcage Stay Wider After Having a Baby?

Do Your Hips and Ribcage Stay Wider After Having a Baby?

Often, yes, at least partly. Widened hips and a wider ribcage after pregnancy are common, and for many women they do not return entirely to their pre-pregnancy measurements. Skeletal change is not the same as weight gain, and no amount of dieting addresses it.

This is one of the least-discussed postpartum changes, which is why moms are blindsided by it. One Reddit poster listed her changes as "Wider hips and ribcage, saggy breasts." Nobody had told her the first two were on the menu.

Why does the ribcage widen?

Your ribcage has to make room. As the uterus grows upward it displaces the diaphragm and pushes the lower ribs outward, and the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum softens under pregnancy hormones to allow it.

After birth the pressure goes, but the ribcage does not always spring back to its exact former shape. Many women find their bra band size stays a little larger permanently.

And the hips?

Pregnancy hormones increase ligament laxity across the pelvis to prepare for delivery, which allows the pelvic bones to shift. After birth those ligaments tighten again, but the alignment they settle into is not always identical to before.

Some women measure the same and simply carry weight differently. Some measure genuinely wider. Both are normal outcomes.

Will it reverse?

Give it a year before you conclude anything. Ligaments continue tightening for months, and if you are breastfeeding, hormonal changes can extend that further.

Beyond that, some of it may be your new baseline. That is not a failure of effort and it is not something a workout addresses, because bone width is not a fitness variable.

What does this actually change day to day?

Clothes, mostly, and this is where it stings. Jeans that fit everywhere except the hips. Bras where the cup is right and the band is not. It is a practical problem that gets experienced as a body-image problem.

The useful move is a measuring tape rather than a memory. Buy for the body you have, since fighting your current measurements with old sizes is a daily reminder of a gap that may not close.

Core and glute strengthening changes how you carry the frame, and posture work makes a genuine visible difference. A supportive wrap helps with trunk stability and posture in the early months, which is the part that is actually addressable.

Frequently asked questions

Do hips permanently widen after childbirth?
For many women, partly. Ligaments loosen during pregnancy and the pelvis can settle into slightly different alignment afterwards.

Why is my ribcage bigger after pregnancy?
The growing uterus pushes the lower ribs outward and hormones soften the connecting cartilage. It does not always fully return.

How long before my hips go back to normal?
Ligaments keep tightening for months. Assessing at around a year is fairer than assessing at 6 weeks.

Can exercise narrow my hips or ribcage again?
Exercise changes the muscle and how you carry yourself. It does not change bone width or ribcage shape.

Will my bra size go back?
Cup size usually shifts with feeding. Band size more often stays slightly larger.
